About Chivas Regal

Part of the French company Pernod Ricard, Chivas was founded in 1786. The home of Chivas is the Strathisla Distillery in Keith, Speyside, Scotland. This distillery, on top of making sensational malts, also has the envied moniker of having the oldest continuously operating Highland distillery as its spiritual home. The core range includes the 12 Year Old, one of the most bought whiskies in the world, the 15 Year Old, the 18 Year Old, and the 21 Year Old.

John and James Chivas were grocers first, then distillers later. Many think that the training and experience the brothers received in this busy marketplace set up the future successes of Chivas Regal.

The Chivas Regal bottle neck says “Established 1801 Aberdeen", although this refers to the first grocers that the brothers ran. The whisky side of Chivas Regal didn’t launch until 1909.

HIstory

Two of fourteen children, John and James Chivas set out from their remote Strathythan farm in 1836 to go to Aberdeen, to find new employment, explore the country, and generally leave the roost. They found employment at a luxury goods emporium, and after two years they became business partners. Success came quickly, in twelve years they had gone from being upstarts in a new city to being appointed as Royal Grocer to the Queen’s mother. The firm’s first blended Malt Scotch whisky, the Royal Glen Dee, was launched in 1854 due to high demand among the upper classes.

In 1890, marketing agents for Chivas reported back to the board of trustees that the American luxury goods market was about to boom, and the new name Chivas Regal was quickly adopted. It became more and more popular, and in 1950 the brand bought the main component of its blend, Strathisla Distillery, outright. Pernod Ricard bought the brand in 2001, and has seen that the Chivas brothers’ continued success live on.
