Whyte & Mackay may be known for its blended whisky, but it also produces liqueurs, vodkas, and some of the most highly acclaimed single malt whiskies in the world. You may know it already through The Dalmore, Jura, Fettercairn, Tamnavulin, Glayva Liqueur, Wildcat Gin, Snow Leopard Vodka, and many others.
Whyte & Mackay have been the shirt sponsor for Hibernian FC in the Scottish Premier League, and Leeds United in the Premier League.
Bottles of Whyte & Mackay were recovered from the shipwreck of the SS Regina, which had been sunk in Lake Huron in 1913. The whisky was still in a good condition according to the underwater archaeologists!
In 2010, Whyte & Mackay sold two bottles of their 64-year-old Dalmore Trinitas malt whisky for £100,000 each.
History
Whyte & Mackay started on the River Clyde in Glasgow. Entrepreneurs James Whyte and Charles Mackay saw an opportunity to provide the hard working residents of Glasgow with an alternative to Cognac. After World War II, the brand decided to focus on the home market. As population grew, so did the reputation of this Scottish distillers. After a few changes of hands throughout its history, it is now owned by Philippines-based group Emperador Inc.
Nowadays, it makes its famous blended whisky by choosing single malts and grain whiskies from the Highlands and Speyside. Then it ages the malt whisky whilst separately aging the grain whisky. The final chapter of the maturation story sees the marrying of these two different whiskies in sherry casks.
