    Johnnie Walker

    If there is one brand that is synonymous with the words blended whisky, then it is Johnnie Walker.

    The brand can be traced back to the 19th century, when John “Johnnie” Walker started selling whisky from his grocery shop in Aryshire, Scotland. Although his blends were popular with the locals, it was until after his death in 1857, when his son Alexander inherited the successful family business.

     Alexander was ambitious and had a flare for marketing and advertising, in 1867 he launched Johnnie Walkers first commercial blend, calling it Old Highland Walker. He would negotiate and barter with the captains of local shipping vessels who would then carry his whisky across the seas. It didn’t take long for Old Highland Walker to become available all around the world.

    It was during this time that Alexander made the move to sell his whiksy in a rectangle bottle, this helped greatly reduce the amount of breakages made during the shipping process. He also introduced the distinct Johnnie Walker label, slanted at exactly 24 degrees in order to stand out from the crowd.

    In 1889 Alexander passed on the family business to his two sons, Alexander II and George. Both of which were ever as ambitious and business savvy as their father.

    In 1909, the pair made the genius decision to name their new range of whiskies after the colour of their distinct labels – and so Johnnie Walker Red label and Johnnie Walker Black label, were born. It was also around this time that leading illustrator of the time, Tom Browne, created the “striding man” logo that we all know so well to this day.

    By the 1920’s Johnnie Walker was available in 120 countries worldwide. In the following decades the brand had become immortalised in pop culture through song and film, Johnnie Walker was the drink to be seen with.

    By the end of the 20th century the Johnnie Walker range had grown, welcoming to the family the brands pinnacle of blended Scotch whisky, Johnnie Walker Blue Label as well as Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve and Johnnie Walker Platinum Label.

    Today Johnnie Walker remains the biggest whisky brand in the world and its range stands proud as a testament to the art of blended Scotch whisky.
