Fettercairn 16 Year Old

Fettercairn 16 Year Old has previously been a limited, annually released expression with a variety of different finishes. The new core release of the 16 Year Old enjoys a finish solely in bourbon casks, a deliberate and purposeful decision by Whisky Maker Gregg Glass and Distillery Manager Stewart Walker for a deeper tropical house style. Bottled at 46.4% abv, free from chill filtration and at natural colour.

Grilled pineapple and vanilla aromas give way to passion fruit, rich honey and Turkish Delight on the palate, with a finish of mandarin, cacao and moist ginger cake.

The Inspiration

So what's the inspiration behind this flower-filled festival contest? Fettercairn, a beloved Highland Single Malt have this year unveiled a garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show! Inspired by their homegrown love of the Scottish landscape, particularly the Cairngorms where this 200-year-old Distillery was founded, the balcony garden echoes the grassy heathland, rocky outcrops and mossy glens. Designed by Sonia Kamel, Sally Giles and Helier Bowling, who collectively form ssh scapes, the space includes particular nods to the distillery’s unique copper cooling ring and planting inspired by species native to the area.

“I stumbled upon Fettercairn Distillery on a wind-swept visit to the north of Scotland and was transfixed by the colours, textures and of course, flavours I found there. We started our design with a passion for this Scottish landscape and have used colours reminiscent of the skyscapes, mountains and glens. The heritage of the distillery itself shines through, particularly in terms of the copper and oak. This garden is a retreat from the indoor, urban lifestyle with the resident able to simply shut the door behind them and find themselves in the elements. We want to recreate something of the environment of The Cairngorms on this high-rise city balcony, providing the space to breathe and relax – slowing the mind following a bracing dip in the ice bath." - Sally Giles at ssh scapes

Fettercairn believe in a few deeply held principles. It uses pure mountain water, unique stills with cooling rings allowing for more distillation, and approaching tradition methods differently when it comes to casking. Fettercairn translates to ‘foot of the mountain’ and the distillery is surrounded by beautiful forests and glens at the foot of the Cairngorms.
