Master Blender and Master of Oak, Dr Jim Beveridge showcases the artistry of blending in the latest release from Johnnie Walker
Dr Jim Beveridge, is the current master blender at Johnnie Walker, the latest in an unbroken line stretching back two centuries to Mr Walker himself. This role puts him at the heart of the world’s most popular brand of Scotch whisky, and necessitates an unwavering commitment to quality and flavour that grants a bottle of whisky that famous slanted label.
The other key ingredient for a master blender is an intense passion for the creativity and innovation that has elevated the famous Striding Man to such lofty heights in the first place. The John Walker & Sons Private Collection offers an insight into Beveridge’s skill and artistry in an annual series of limited edition releases exploring various aspects of the Johnnie Walker house style. Previous editions have highlighted the influence of smoke, the rare fruit character of the Walker house style, and the art of balancing aromatic honey sweetness with soft, elusive distillery notes, while the latest addition to the Private Collection explores Beveridge’s ‘Mastery of Oak’.
With only 5,588 bottles released worldwide, the 2017 Edition celebrates the contribution of the cask to Johnnie Walker’s award-winning Scotch whiskies. The Master Blender’s masterplan brings together three cask styles to complement the mature fruit character of the spirit to great effect, creating a sumptuous whisky brimming with oak-rich fruit notes.
In the first vatting, first fill ex-bourbon American oak casks were selected to mature handpicked malt and grain whiskies. The malts and grains in the second vatting experienced a long, gentle maturation in less active refill casks of American oak and some European oak, allowing the character of the Highland and Speyside distilleries to shine through. Finally, a number of malts and grains were matured in highly active, fresh American oak from Beveridge’s stock of experimental casks to provide an intensity of sweet vanilla, bringing structure and depth to the final blend.
Now available to order from The Whisky Shop, the John Walker & Sons Private Collection 2017 Edition is presented in an individually numbered decanter at a strength of 46.8% abv, complete with a striking display case.
