Our Top Sweet and Smoky Drams for Father's Day
When shopping for whiskies, one of the most important things you have to bear in mind is what kind of flavours the recipient of the bottle enjoys. Whiskies are mainly broken down into two categories - sweet and smoky. If you know which of the two your dad will prefer then you're onto a winner! Below is a selection of our favourite sweet and smoky drams that are sure to impress this Father's Day.
This expression was distilled in 1998 and was aged for 23 years. Matured in ex-bourbon casks, it was then moved to three ex-Barolo wine casks where it spent a finishing period of at least 18 months. This dram is bottled at a cask strength of 52.9% abv, is free from chill filtration, and is presented in natural colour.
On the nose, aromas of summer flowers, caramel chocolates, and Werther's Originals sweets all arrive. The palate is one that opens with a big hit of winey tannins, with leather, and smooth oak all combining with figs, dark plum fruits, and blackberries. A gentle finish awaits, with a lingering honey smoothness. Sumptuous.
The Glenturret's Triple Wood has been matured in a combination of European and American sherry oak casks alongside bourbon barrels, before being bottled at 43% abv without chill filtration or added colouring.
The nose is sweet with citrus fruits and caramel, alongside hints of fresh ginger cake and vanilla sponge that develop into stronger flavours on the palate. Oak and apple blossom are detected with a drop of water, making way for a sweet and salty finish.

Distilled at The GlenAllachie in Speyside, this single malt is crafted in a combination of first fill bourbon, sherry, and virgin oak casks. Matured for at least 12 years before bottling, this flagship expression from The GlenAllachie is presented at 46% abv.

On the nose, there is bright citrus and tart rhubarb alongside gentle floral notes. The fruitiness continues on the palate and is complemented by hints of vanilla and shortbread before leading into the oaky and malty finish.
Inspired by traditional Speyside malts of the 19th century, this smoky 12-year-old is crafted with peated and unpeated spirit, matured in sherry casks, bourbon barrels, and Marsala wine casks. A smooth and creamy expression with layers of aromatic peat smoke, this is a top-drawer dram.
Smoked vanilla and charred orange lead the way with some toasted almond notes. The palate opens with rich dark chocolate, fruit peel, and brown sugar, before smoked oak, cocoa, and orange oil in the finish.

Ardbeg An Oa takes its name from the Mull of Oa, one of the most untamed parts of Islay with cliffs towering over the tempestuous Atlantic Ocean on one side and the calm shelter of the southern coast on the other. Bottled at 46.6% abv, the nose is subtly smoky with creamy toffee and aniseed atop fruity peach and banana notes. The palate is smooth and creamy with orange chocolate, treacle, smoky tea leaves, and sweet spices. Gentle aniseed and hickory linger with subtle smoke on the finish.
