Iconic Port Ellen Distillery To Be Revived

The Port Ellen Distillery of Islay is set to be rejuvenated with Diageo unveiling plans to the local community this week.

The Port Ellen Distillery was traditionally one of the most innovative distilleries in the 19th Century and new plans show that want to continue this through the 21st century. The distillery is due to be brought back into production using two stills which replicate the original copper pot stills used at Port Ellen. A pair of smaller stills to experiment with other spirits to make the distillery as innovative as possible.

The old kiln buildings and seaside warehouses will be restored however new spacious light-filled buildings will be constructed to house the distillery production.

Glenmorangie Reveal Private Edition 10 – Allta

Glenmorangie Allta (Scots Gaelic for ‘wild’) is the Distillery’s first single malt to be created with yeast discovered growing wild on its own barley.

Dr Bill Lumsden was inspired to create Glenmorangie Allta as he gathered samples of Cadboll barley from fields near the Distillery. This barley nurtured a previously unidentified species of wild yeast and Dr Lumsden set out to bring the two together in the innovative Glenmorangie Allta expression. This makes Glenmorangie Allta the first ever single malt to have been fermented using their own bespoke strain of yeast.

Glenmorangie Allta defies Scotch whisky convention to prove that yeast can influence taste –to astonishing effect, revealing the importance of yeast to the myriad flavours found in Scotch whisky,Glenmorangie Allta’s rich and fruity character opens up compelling possibilities for the future of single malt.

The orignal Tweeddale whisky was produced in 1820 by J & A Davidson, in the town of Coldstream in the Scottish Borders, and continued by Richard Day from 1899 until the Second World War. Seven decades later, Richard's great-grandson inherited his cellar book and began recreating this historic blended whisky with a focus on small batch aged blends.

The Evolution is the oldest expression from The Tweeddale to date. Inspired by Richard Day's cellar book, The Evolution is a blend of classic Speyside single malts and a Lowland single grain. All the components of The Evolution have been aged for at least 28 years to create a complex expression that embodies the vision and craftsmanship of the venerable Borders blender.

Isle of Raasay Distillery, the home of R&B Distillers, is perhaps the only distillery in Scotland that provides luxury accommodation within the same building as a working distillery. Designed by local architect Olli Blair and renowned Scottish designer Anne Hunter, the distillery offers six exclusive en-suite bedrooms well-appointed with luxury amenities and comfort with either double or queen size beds, and arguably the best view from any distillery in Scotland.
