Whisky is coming!
With the final season of Game of Thrones coming in April this year, HBO & Diageo have brought together eight single malts, one for each of the iconic Houses of Westeros as well as one for the Night’s Watch.
Each of the eight whiskies from the limited edition collection are from a different distiller and four expressions in the collection feature completely new liquid bottled especially for the series with the Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old and Cardhu Gold Reserve rebottled and available in the US for the first time. Take a look at the full collection below:
Headed by the Mother of
Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen, House Targaryen has proven its resilience
throughout history, marching toward the Iron Throne with the greatest army the
known world has seen. Fueled by the same fiery spirit and courage to conquer
all challenges in their way, Helen Cumming and her daughter-in-law Elizabeth
were pioneers in the male-dominated whisky industry, taking the helm at Cardhu
in the 1880s.
This limited edition expression of Cardhu Gold Reserve has
soft honeyed aromas on the nose with a wisp of toasted oak. The palate brings
baked apple, warming cinnamon and allspice, evolving into a rich caramel with
hints of clove. The finish has a gentle malty biscuit note lingering.
House Tyrrell of
Highgarden rules over the Reach, the lush and fertile region of Westeros that
feeds the entire realm. Like the Reach, Clynelish is positioned among green
pastures and rolling hills with scenic views of the North Sea.
The nose is bursting with fresh fruits, with a rich and
creamy vanilla emerging. The palate is complex and sweet with the signature
Clynelish waxiness, before subtle maritime notes are revealed in the finish.
The lords of House Stark
ruled as King in the North for generations, in the vast cold expanse of the northern
lands of Westeros. The Stark's resilience, strength and ability to thrive in
the most intense situations are greatly shaped by Winterfell's frigid
temperatures. Like House Stark, Dalwhinnie is made in one of the highest and
coldest distilleries in Scotland, and its extreme conditions are responsible
for shaping its signature flavour.
Matured in 100% ex-bourbon casks, this Highland single malt
has a uniquely floral, honeyed character. The palate has rich manuka honey and
fresh figs, developing into malt balls before a rich fruit cake finish.
This 9-year-old Ilsay
single malt from Lagavulin is the standard bearer for House Lannister, one of
the richest and oldest dynasties in the Seven Kingdoms. The Lannister's rise to
the Iron Throne took years of meticulous calvulation and tenacity, much like
Lagavulin's rise to legendary status, which has been over 200 years in the
Matured exclusively in 100% first-fill ex-bourbon casks, this
expression has an explosion of sweet smoke on the nose, with a touch more zesty
maritime brine than the standard Lagavulin expressions. The palate brings a
sweet, smoky caramelised banana note, with toasted marshmallow and vanilla,
before a dry menthol and salted caramel finish.
Having led the rebellion
against the Targaryen dynasty, Robert Baratheon took the Iron Throne to rule
over the Seven Kingdoms, with the Baratheon stag flying above King's Landing.
Royal Lochnagar also boasts a royal lineage, being renamed from New Lochnagar
after a visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who granted a royal warrant
to the Highland distillery.
The nose has soft oak and banana with a caramelised brown
sugar note. The palate is sweet with liquorice and creamy vanilla coffee,
before a long nutty finish with a creamy custard tart aspect.
House Greyjoy rules the Iron Islands, making their home on the bleak and blustery islands off the west coast of Westeros. This Talisker is distilled on the Isle of Skye off the west coast of Scotland, creating a salty maritime character that would be familiar to the Ironborn who take to the sea to make their fortune.
Crafted in heavily charred ex-bourbon American Oak casks, this Select Reserve expression has a quintessential Talisker nose, with dry peppery smoke and dark chocolate notes. The palate has rich salted caramel and chilli flakes with more peppery smoke. The finish is complex and dry with fruitcake, spice and leather.
Distilled at Glendullan
on the banks of the River Fiddich, The Singleton of Glendullan Select
represents House Tully, Lord of the Riverlands. Matured in 100% ex-bourbon
casks, it is bottles at 40% abv.
The nose has Madagascan vanilla, with a sweet clove spice
developing. The palate brings apples and orchard fruits, with clove and
cinnamon emerging. The finish has sweet red berry compote with vanilla cheesecake
and a cereal spice.
Oban distillery sits beneath the steep cliff that overlooks the bay in the frontier between the Highlands and the Islands, separating land and sea, just as Castle Black sits between Westeros and what lies beyond The Wall and the terrifying forces of the Night King. Bottled at 43% abv, this limited edition could certainly keep the Night's Watch warm on even the coldest of nights.
The nose has straw and tangy cereal notes, before mellowing to cocoa and cherry. The palate is rich and mouth-coating with cherry pie and candied orange peel. The finish is long and rich with creme caramel and charred oak aspects.
