Brora 35 year old 2014 Special Release Description

Part of the Diageo Special Releases Collection 2014.

A limited edition, natural cask strength single malt from the closed distillery at Brora on the Sutherland coast. It is the equal-oldest Brora bottled in this series and the thirteenth of a limited series of annual releases. Annual allocation has extended availability of this irreplaceable malt but stocks are now depleted.

Distilled in 1978 and matured in refill American Oak and European Oak casks for over 35 years old - only 2,964 individually numbered bottles were produced.

Mild nose-feel, with Brora’s keynote scented wax immediately apparent, backed by old-fashioned canvas tents with hemp guy-ropes, sweet tablet/ crystalline sugar, crystalline salt and clotted cream. Waxy and more spicy that the nose leads one to believe, with a sweetish start and a salty middle before a long, warming, slightly smoky finish.

Knowledge Bar

Founded in 1819 as Clynelish at a cost of £750 by the Marquess of Stafford, who became Duke of Sutherland, this was one of Scotland's earliest purpose built malt whisky distilleries.

The stills at the distillery were coal-fired until 1961. Once electricity came to the fore a new Clynelish distillery was built in 1967. The old distillery re-opened with re-built mash house 1975 and was re-named Brora.

Produced alongside the new Clynelish in the early 80s in a heavily peated Islay style. Closed in 1983.
