Brora 38 Year Old 2016 Special Release Description
Part of the Diageo Special Releases 2016 collection, this limited edition Highland Single Malt is the oldest expression to be bottled to date from the now closed Brora distillery. Distilled in 1977 and matured in refill American oak hogsheads and refill European oak butts, only 2,984 individually numbered bottles are available worldwide. The nose offers a wave of fresh citrus, smoke and wood ash with mint and toffee accentuating notes of leather polish. The palate is smooth and slightly waxy with lemon peel and wood ash notes rising above a sweet caramel before a minty, peaty tang develops. The finish is long with ginger and dark chocolate aspects.
Founded in 1819 as Clynelish, the distillery was built by the Marquess of Stafford for the princely sum of £750 - this would barely buy half a bottle today! Re-opened in 1975 as Brora to supplement the new Clynelish distillery built in 1967, before closing once more in 1983.
