History

Founded on Mannoch hill by John and Helen Cumming, Cardhu began as a seasonal farm distillery in 1824. The distillery was mainly run by Helen, sold bottles of whisky to passers-by through the window of their farmhouse. Due to their location high up above the River Spey, Helen could see the police coming before everyone else. She would throw flour on herself and say that she was baking bread to disguise the smell before flying a flag outside to warn nearby distilleries. In 1885, the distillery was fully rebuilt and their output greatly increased. In 1893 Elizabeth Cumming sold the distillery to Johnnie Walker and Sons, on the condition that the Cumming family still ran it. It is currently owned by Diageo.
