Gin

Gin originated in the 11th century as a medicinal spirit made by monks and alchemists in Europe. It's flavour is imparted by juniper berries and, indeed, its name is a shortened version of the old English word genever, derived from the Latin for juniper. Today, gin is flavoured with all kinds of botanicals and herbs in addition to juniper - and enjoyed in the iconic 'gin and tonic'.
