Part of the Diageo Special Releases Collection 2014.A limited edition, natural cask strength single malt whisky from the essential Islay distillery, Lagavulin, on Islay’s rocky south coast. It is the thirteenth in a series of special 12 year old releases from the original distiller’s stocks.Vatted from refill American Oak casks, each at least 12 years old, this is a perfect introduction to the Special Releases.Very pale gold in colour and a surprisingly mild nose-feel, with initial egg custard or sour cream notes. These soon give way to more familiar Lagavulin scents of natural varnish, ash and smouldering bonfire, against a background of tart redcurrants. A thin texture and a surprisingly mild taste, but with big character: sweet, salty and sour (lime zest?) in the middle, and heaps of smoke in the back. A resinous aftertaste. Read More

Knowledge Bar

Lagavulin Distillery was founded in 1816 by John Johnston. The name comes from the Gaelic "Laggan Mhouillin" meaning "hollow where the mill is". Control passed to Sir Peter Mackie, owner of the legendary "White Horse Distillers", in 1890 with a second distillery, Malt Mill, opening in 1908. Due to an explosion and fire in 1952, the distillery was rebuilt and the mash tuns brought entirely under cover for the first time. Malt Mill was closed and the stills transferred to Lagavulin still-house in 1962. All four stills were converted to steam heating in 1969. Back to top
