Arran

Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Independently owned Isle of Arran Distillers is one of just two distilleries on the island, where it was founded in 1994 by former managing Director of Chivas, Harold Currie. The distillery stands in the village of Lochranza, to the North, and draws its source waters from the Loch na Davie, which are purified by granite and softened by peat as it arrives from the mountain above.

About Arran

Arran Distillery is fitted with bespoke wooden wash backs and copper stills and uses only traditional methods in the production of its whisky. The spirit is matured to perfection in earth floored warehouses, where the influence of the clear mountain air and warm Gulf Stream breeze is evident in the resulting dram. Every whisky from the distillery is free from artificial colouring and chill filtration.

The construction of the distillery was briefly halted to allow two golden eagles to nest in the surrounding Lochranza hills. These eagles have now become a well-loved part of the distillery - they can often be seen flying overhead.

Arran Distillery is a patron of the World of Robert Burns Federation. They have a few releases that pay tribute to Scotland's great poet. Interestingly, Arran is the only distillery that is allowed to use Burns' image and signature on their products.

Arran was named the Scottish Distillery of the Year in 2007.

History

Founded in 1994 by Harold Currie, Arran was the first legal distillery on the island since the closure of Lagg Distillery in 183, almost 160 years prior. The location of the distillery was selected due to how close it is to Loch na Davie, which is used as their water source. The water from Loch na Davie is some of the purest in Scotland and this shows in the crisp, clean flavours of the whisky produced at Arran Distillery.
