Benromach

Single Malt Scotch Whisky

One of the few independently owned distilleries remaining in Scotland, and the smallest distillery in Speyside, Benromach was established in 1898 on the outskirts of the ancient town of Forres. A decade after United Distillers decided to mothball the site in 1983, it was reopened in its current incarnation, and bottled as a single malt for the first time since the 1900s.

History

Benromach was founded in 1898 by Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman. However, the distillery got off to a pretty rocky start as it quickly shut down in 1900 due to financial problems. In 1907, the distillery reopened under the name Forres distillery. Unfortunately, the distillery closed down again in 1910 and the doors did not reopen until after the First World War. The distillery spent the majority of the 20th century passing between owners and undergoing periods of closure, and in 1983 the distillery is mothballed. Luckily, the distillery was purchased by Gordon & MacPhail in 1993 and was back to business by 1998. Since then, Speyside’s smallest distillery has gone from strength to strength!
