Bunnahabhain
Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Bunnahabhain Distillery is located north of Port Askaig on Islay and is the source of one of the more mild whiskies to be produced on the famous island.
About Bunnahabhain
The distinctly less smoky Islay character produced at Bunnahabhain is fitting with the distillery’s remote location; tucked away in the North East corner – it is noticeably detached from the 7 other distilleries on the island.
The scenic single track road which leads from Port Askaig to the distillery will take you through some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland. Bunnahabhain is one of the lesser known distilleries on the island and has earned a status as something of a hidden gem for whisky lovers.
Bunnahabhain's main water source is the Margadale River. In Gaelic, Bunnahabhain translates to "mouth of a river."
While the distillery is famed for releasing expressions that are not heavily peated, around 20% of their produce is actually very peaty. The majority of this whisky is used in small amounts in a variety of bottlings.
Bunnahabhain opened a fabulous visitor centre in 2021.
History
Bunnahabhain was founded in 1881 with production beginning in 1883. The distillery produced a steady stream of whisky for a century until Bunnahabhain unfortunately mothballed in 1982. Fortunately, the distillery resumed production in 1984, however, they were producing considerably less whisky than they were before their closure. Luckily, Bunnahabhain managed to work their way back to their former glory over time. In 2019, the distillery began an exciting three-year long refurbishment to spruce up the historic site.
