A closed distillery, this hard to come by single malt whisky is now owned by Diageo. A once thriving distillery, it was one of the distilleries included in the phrase “Rome was built on seven hills, Dufftown stands on seven stills”, and was open for 91 years. In its heyday, it primarily provided liquid for blends, though since its closure, a handful of single malt expressions have been bottled and sold.
After providing whiskies for blends such as ‘Black & White’ and Lowrie Scotch Whisky in the distillery’s heyday, only a small number of single malt expressions have been released since its closure. These include a Rare Malts edition in 2003, and a 28-year-old in 2005, and a 36-year-old in 2013, and a 1984 vintage in 2021 – distilled just before its closure in 1985.
Built as the fourth of Dufftown’s seven stills at the peak of the whisky boom in 1894, it was passed to James Buchanan soon after its completion. The liquid distilled at Convalmore was used in his blended whisky brands ‘Black & White’ and Lowrie Scotch Whisky. After passing to United Distillers, the brand was mothballed in 1985, with the site being sold to William Grant & Sons.
