Since 1897, Glen Moray single malt has been crafted in the ancient town of Elgin, in the Speyside region of Scotland. The nearby River Lossie, malted barley, traditional copper stills and ex-bourbon casks join to make Glen Moray one of the best loved whiskies in Scotland.
About Glen Moray
Most Glen Moray begin life in specially selected American oak ex-bourbon casks sourced from a single distillery in Kentucky, before the aging experts finish the liquid in a wide variety of barrels. Each cask is specially sourced, as Glen Moray utilise this finishing touch to impart complex flavour onto each whisky. The Classic selection features a port cask finish, a sherry cask finish, a chardonnay cask finish, a cabernet sauvignon cask finish, along with a classic peated and classic single malt.
Glen Moray distillery offers a wide variety of tours, with a warm welcome and warming whisky samples.
The warehouse enjoys a milder climate as the distillery is sheltered from the extremes of Scottish weather by the nearby Cairngorm and Monadhiath mountains. This is great for maturing whisky as the temperature and humidity stays constant through the year.
Previous owners include LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) and Glenmorangie Company. They are now under the control of La Martiniquaise, who purchased Glen Moray in 2008.
History
In 1897, Elgin West Brewery had been making local ales since 1830 when the owners decided to transition into whisky-making. At the time, the wide variety of casks used to mature the liquid was rare – from Marsala wine casks to sherry casks. In the 1950s, Gallowcrook farm, whose local barley had been used to craft the first batch, was purchased and upgraded the operation with two new stills, a new still house, modern malting facilities and new warehouses. Throughout the decades, more and more whisky was able to be produced and their distinctive wood finishes were made in 1999. After 120 years in operation, in 2016 the Elgin Heritage collection of exceptional aged single malts was released to commemorate the achievement of Glen Moray.
