Named for the river Spey, Glen Spey is one of five distilleries in Rothes. It is owned by Diageo, and used as a primary component in blends. Although, the obscure single malt can be found through various independent bottlings.
A relatively small distillery, Glen Speys small output is used in J&B blends. The spirit stills at Glen Spey are equipped with purifiers, which create additional reflux, resulting in a lighter spirit. The liquid is then matured in their racked warehouse in a combination of bourbon, Sherry and hogshead casks.
Founded in 1878 by James Stuart, Glen Spey operated under the radar for centuries as a component of blends. It wasn’t until 2001, when Diageo purchased the distillery, that an official bottling was released. It’s history includes a small dire in 1920, and a doubling of its amount of stills in 1970. A special 21-year-old was released in 2010.
