    Glenglassaugh Single Malt Whisky

Glenglassaugh is located in Portsoy, Banffshire and was founded in 1875. The distillery, set in the middle ground between the Speyside and Highland regions, has often struggled; going in and out of production and changing hands multiple times within its first 20 years of existence. In 1907 the buildings fell silent and there was no further production until 1931 when it was briefly revived before being mothballed in 1936. It was 1960 before it was reopened again, following substantial construction work which added new stills and expanded the production capacity to a more modern scale. It looked like Glenglassaugh had recovered, but it suffered heavily during the recession and was mothballed again in 1986.

Many presumed the distillery would remain closed for good after that, but it was purchased by energy company The Scaent Group for £5million in 2008. They completely modernised the equipment in the distillery, and then revitalised the brand by releasing a fine range of single malts including 21, 20 and 40 year old expressions.

In early 2013, the distillery was purchased by the BenRiach Distillery Company; who had previously overseen the rejuvenation of both BenRinnes and Glendronach distilleries. Incredibly, this distillery has spent more than half of its lifetime in silence! However, it now seems to have found a new lease of life which should see many more single malts being released from Glenglassaugh in the future.
