A historic distillery, Glenkinchie serves as the Lowland expression that makes up Johnnie Walker blended whisky. The floral single malt is also bottled as a 12-year-old under the Glenkinchie name.
About Glenkinchie
Located in East Lothian, known as ‘the garden of Scotland’, Glenkinchie distillery was founded in 1825. For over 150 years, their whisky was severely underrated, until it finally received the worldwide recognition that it deserves in the 1980s. It has since been dubbed ‘The Edinburgh Malt’, due to its proximity to Scotland’s capital. The whisky has always been produced mostly for use in blends, with only 10% of their output being reserved to bottle their signature single malt. After being taken over by Diageo, the company opened a multi-million pound immersive visitor centre within the historic distillery in 2020.
Johnnie Walker uses the whisky as the Lowland element of their blend, along with Caol Ila, Clynelish and Cardhu.
Glenkinchie's large copper pot stills are among the biggest in the industry.
The distillery boasts 40,000 visitors a year to their new visitor centre.
History
One of only a handful of distilleries to continue operating through the Second World War, Glenkinchie has been non-stop distilling since 1825. With the agricultural revolution in the late 18th century, barley growing came to East Lothian and in turn, the Rate brothers launched their distillery – originally named Milton. The land on which they farmed their prized barley (manured with seaweed and ripened early), belonged to the de Quincy family for generations. Kinchie is a derivative of the name, and also the name of the burn running through the glen. They principally supplied their light Lowland single malt for use in blends – from Haig to Dewars- and 1988, they became the Lowland representatives of Diageo’s ‘Classic Malts’.
