Founded on the Durnoch Firth by the Matheson brothers in 1843, Glenmorangie distillery is now home to one of the most popular single malt whiskies in the world.
Known as the Distillers of Tain, Glenmorangie has been honing its craft for more than 175 years. It boasts the tallest stills in Scotland, claimed by the company to produce an extremely light taste. All of its products being matured in white oak casks which are manufactured from trees growing in Glenmorangie’s own forest in the Ozark Mountains in Missouri, United States. Glenmorangie has been the best selling single malt in Scotland almost continuously since 1983
Exports of whisky were important during the war, but enemy action disrupted and destroyed deliveries to the United States and Canada.
The Glenmorangie logo was inspired by the mysterious and ancient Cadboll Stone, one of the best surviving historical monuments from the Picts.
The whisky is distilled by a trusted group of locals known as The Men of Tain.
History
Legends tell that alcoholic beverages of one kind or another were produced in and around Tain since the Middle Ages. The earliest record of the production of alcohol at Morangie Farm is dated 1703. It is believed that illicit distillation had been practiced at this location in the Northern Highlands for many years prior, but offical production didn’t begin until 1849. The distillery was then rebuilt in 1887, and produced consistently until it was sold to partners MacDonald & Muir Ltd and Durham in 1918. Other than closure between 1931 and 1936 as a result of US Prohibition, the distillery continued undisturbed until it was sold to Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessey for £300 million in 2004.
