Legends tell that alcoholic beverages of one kind or another were produced in and around Tain since the Middle Ages. The earliest record of the production of alcohol at Morangie Farm is dated 1703. It is believed that illicit distillation had been practiced at this location in the Northern Highlands for many years prior, but offical production didn’t begin until 1849. The distillery was then rebuilt in 1887, and produced consistently until it was sold to partners MacDonald & Muir Ltd and Durham in 1918. Other than closure between 1931 and 1936 as a result of US Prohibition, the distillery continued undisturbed until it was sold to Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessey for £300 million in 2004.
