The Glenrothes has been producing some of Speyside's finest single malt scotch whisky for more than a century. With over 140 years of whisky making tradition, Glenrothes are proud to celebrate the expertise that comes with tradition.
Complex, full, and beautifully balanced, every dram of The Glenrothes is a statement. To this day The Glenrothes is one of the few distilleries in Scotland to have its own source of water for production, processing, and spirit reduction on site. The new make spirit is nurtured in the tall copper stills at the distillery for much longer than is strictly necessary. Slow distillation provides a lighter, fruitier spirit, eliminating more impurities and allowing for the production of a more delicately flavoured spirit. The majority of The Glenrothes is matured in sherry seasoned oak casks.
The town has won multiple horticultural awards in the "Beautiful Scotland" and "Britain in Bloom" contests for the quality of its parks and landscaping.
In 2018, The Glenrothes 25 Year Old was awarded the Ultimate Spirits Challenge top honour, the Chairman's Trophy for Best Speyside Single Malt.
There’s no visitor center at the Glenrothes and the distillery is not opened to the public.
1878 works on the site begun that in former years had been home of a sawmill. The distillery itself had a shaky start and turbulent history. Over-proof whisky is notoriously highly flammable, and the distillery has paid the price. Extension work began in 1896 on a second malt kiln, and an increase in stills from two to four but, before the work was finished, a fire in December 1897 caused serious damage. The distillery saw further damage with a serious explosion in 1903. Prohibition, the First World War, and the Wall Street Crash in 1929 achieved what the fires didn’t: production went down, and the distillery closed down at last. In 1963 a third pair of stills was installed, and heating changed from direct fire to internal steam. Thank goodness!
