About Port Charlotte

Port Charlotte are an arm of the Bruichladdich Distillery. Bruichladdich released the Port Charlotte series in 2006, and have further expanded this range to ever-increasing acclaim. Every step of Port Charlotte’s whisky-making process is done on Islay. At the moment, whisky from this brand is distilled at the Bruichladdich Distillery, and matured in oak casks at Port Charlotte. Ever since its inception, its speciality has been showstopping, punchy, heavily peated drams.

History

Port Charlotte brand commemorates the mothballed Port Charlotte Distillery (which itself was renamed Lochindaal Distillery). The village of Port Charlotte itself was built to accommodate workers at the distillery, both being completed in 1829. The distillery’s closure in 1929, exactly 100 years after it was built, was due to a variety of reasons. There was an over-production in the whisky industry, for starters. The effects of prohibition in the USA were also being keenly felt across the pond in Scotland. The stock market crash of that year did not help its cause either. Bizarrely, it would be the midst of another global banking crisis that its fortunes would change. Bruichladdich acquired most of the old distillery buildings with the plan to create a new brand that could create heavily-peated whisky. This is yet to be re-opened.
