About Speyburn

Speyburn distillery was designed by world-renowned architect Charles C. Doig to integrate the distillery into the natural landscape. He invented the now iconic pagoda ventilator as a solution to the limited space, which flows fresh Speyside air over the grains at all times. After 125 years of distilling, Speyburn pride themselves on producing a quintessentially Speyside dram – light, sweet, natural and classic.

The founder was determined that his distillery should open in the year of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, and achieved this on the last day of 1897, by dint of the workforce toiling day and night while a violent snowstorm raged, in a still-house in which windows had yet to be fitted!

The soft, crystal-clear waters of Granty Burn inspired Hopkins to choose the location of the distillery. He knew such exceptionally pure water would produce a remarkable whisky with a naturally refreshing character.

All Speyburn single malt is matured in air-dried oak casks seasoned with bourbon or sherry. These excellent vessels help the spirit fully develop its natural qualities.

History

John Hopkins was already a successful whisky merchant when he set out into the Speyside countryside to find an ideal location to make the finest golden Scotch. Building the distillery just in time to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, they battered through snow and ice to make sure the very first distillate was decanted into a cask December – retaining the vintage of 1897. During the war, the distillery closed down and was used as home to The Scottish Artillery Regiments, and upon reopening, a tractor replaced the distillery’s traditional horse and cart. In 1992, Inver House Distillers purchased Speyburn, and in 2014, embarked on a journey to double production capacity.
