Single Malt Scotch Whisky
A core component in many of Diageo's prized blended whiskies, Strathmill is rarely found as a single malt. Beginning life as porridge oats mill, it is one of three distilleries within the Moray town of Keith at the heart of Speyside.
About Strathmill
Light in character, Strathmill utilises lengthy maturation to gather fruity elements. In the distillation process, a purifier pipe runs from the lyne arm into the body of the spirit stills, which adds a lightly oily character similar to olive oil.
History
Strathmill Distillery began as a meal mill, driven by water from the River Isla in Keith. Built in 1892, it was originally named Glenisla-Glenlivet, but its name was changed three years later when it was acquired by the London gin distiller W&A Gilbey. When Gilbeys merged with Justerini & Brooks in 1962, Strathmill became a key filling for J&B Rare and as a result is very uncommon as a single malt – the only proprietary expression is a 12 Years Old in Diageo’s Flora & Fauna range, first released in 2001.
Strathmill was the first whisky to be shipped by tanker.
Strathmill distillery was once home to a flock of "guard geese". Any non-regular visitor approaching the distillery would be met with such ferocious honking and threatening behaviour from the geese that they had to be made of strong stuff to keep walking to reach their destination.
There have only been two official bottlings of Strathmill: Strathmill 25 Year Old released in 1992, and Strathmill 12 Year Old Flora & Fauna released in 2001.
