About Jameson
Made at the New Midleton Distillery in Cork, Ireland, the exceptionally balanced blends that Jameson creates are a mixture of Irish single pot still and grain whiskeys. Introduced in 1780, it is by far the best selling Irish whiskey and has been so for a long time.
John Jameson, the founder, was the grandfather of Guglielmo Marconi, Nobel Prize winnner and inventor of radio.
The Jameson family coat of arms includes the phrase 'Sine Metu', which means 'Without Fear'. They were granted this coat of arms for fighting off pirates along the Scottish coast in the 17th century.
The distillery did not sell Jameson in bottles until 1968. For nearly two centuries the whiskey had been sold exclusively by the cask to bonders.
History
The story begins with Jameson Whiskey’s namesake, John Jameson, moving to Dublin in the early 18th century with his wife Margaret Haig. Margaret had family in the whiskey business, her father John Stein founded the distillery in 1780. John found himself managing the business in 1805. This distillery was in Dublin, and this happened before a stratospheric boom in sales. They moved site to Midleton Distillery in Cork, in 1975. Jameson today is distributed in 122 countries worldwide and accounts for the largest share of the global Irish whiskey market, which is estimated at more than 22 million bottles per year.
