A massively popular and rare Japanese single malt, Karuizawa has risen in recent years to be one of the most sought after on the planet. Closed in 2001, single cask bottlings started to be imported in Europe by bottler Number One Drinks, and the rest, they say, is history.
A much sought after whisky, the mountainous distillery of Karuizawa was closed in 2001. It was located on the slopes of an active volcano with an astonishingly pure water source and a climate perfect for high-alcohol content maturation. A golden goose for collectors, the whisky is notoriously scarce.
Established in 1955, the distillery began production in 1956. It was owned by Mercian Corporation, and claimed the title of the smallest in Japan. It was mothballed in 2001, and closed in 2011. The remaining stock from the distillery was purchased and is now sold as a collectable, luxury whisky.
