About Midleton
With a rich distilling history dating back to the 19th century, the history of Midleton Distillery is inexorably tied to the history of Irish whiskey. The bottles it releases under the Midleton name are exceptionally rare and, to some, are the paramount of Irish whiskey in quality. In the 1980s, the Very Rare range was released to huge acclaim, and in 2020 the distillery has been brought back to life through the Silent Distillery Collection. The Midleton complex is home to many other brands beside its own, including Jameson, Green Spot, Paddy, Power’s, and Redbreast.
During the Napoleonic Wars, the mill that the Old Midleton Distillery was founded on was purchased by the Government for £20,000 and converted for uses as a barracks and stables.
The last release of the Silent Distillery Collection will coincide with a historic event, Old Midleton Distillery’s 200th birthday.
The transfer of production between the distilleries was seamless: the distillery workers left the Old Midleton distillery in the evening and started at the new complex the following morning.
History
With a rich distilling history dating back to the 19th century, the history of Midleton Distillery is inexorably tied to the history of Irish whiskey. The Murphy family started to distil by the side of the Dungourney River, Country Cork, Ireland, in 1825. In 1975, Irish Distillers Ltd decided to close its poorly located distilleries in Dublin and open a new one on the Midleton site. Midleton was equipped with three column stills and four pot stills. It now creates a whole host of whiskies, over 200 individual bottlings take place every year.
