History

Shinjiro Torii established Japans first malt whisky distillery, Yamazaki Distillery, on the outskirts of Kyoto after blending a successful sweet grape wine. In 1937, Suntory’s Kakubin whisky won the heart of the Japanese public, and remains Japan’s top-selling whisky by value today. As the business grew, it became synonymous with Japanese whisky and opened more distilleries. In 2002, the founders grandson, Shingo Torii, became Suntory’s Third Master Blender.
