Japanese Single Malt
A product of Nikka Japanese whisky, Yoichi is a range of single malt expressions distilled in the town of Yoichi in Hokkaido. This location was chosen as it has a similar climate to Scotland, the country where founder Masataka Taketsuru learned the art of whisky-making. Yoichi is unique as a peated Japanese whisky.
About Yoichi
Yoichi’s core range is made up of Yoichi Single Malt, Yoichi Single Malt Non-Peated and Yoichi Single Malt Apple Brandy Wood Finish. The whisky is known for its distinct Scottish influence, with a Japanese flavour profile. This can be detected with the mixed notes of fresh apple and melon, cut with Scottish peat smoke.
Masataka set a pot still using direct coal-fire when he built the Yoichi Distillery. This rare method requires highly skilled craftsmen, and imbues toasty burnt flavours on the whisky.
Yoichi's signature single malt has no age statement.
A blend of casks of various ages, with a high proportion of ex-sherry casks.
History
Built in 1934, founder Masataka Taketsuru learned to craft whisky at Longmorn Distillery in Speyside, Scotland. He brought his love for single malt Scotch to his home country and chose Yoichi as it is close to the sea, surrounded by mountains on three sides and in many ways similar to the Scottish Highlands. The cold climate and crisp air, with a fresh water reserve made this the perfect place to begin his venture. He crafted Yoichi single malt, and the whisky is still produced using the traditional method of using direct coal fire to heat the stills that he insisted upon.
