Conceived of by five friends chatting in a sauna and sharing a dram, they asked - why not make Finnish rye whisky? Since that fateful day, they have grown to become a craft powerhouse. Always only using 100% Finnish wholegrain rye, whether it be whisky, gin or liqueur.
About Kyrö
The core whisky range features Kyrö Malt, peppery with vanilla and caramel, and Kyrö Wood Smoke, with their classic flavours lifted by crisp alder smoke. Their gin range includes, Kyrö Dark Gin, spicy and deep, Kyrö Pink Gin, sweet and fruity, and Kyrö Gin, fresh and fragrant. Kyrö Dairy Cream is their lactose and gluten free liqueur, made using local cream and rye whisky as a nod to their old dairy farm beginnings.
99.9% of the energy in the distillery and visitor centre is created through renewable energy sources.
To get feedback in their early stages, founder Miika decided to smuggle a sample to The Whisky Show in London. He poured drams in the gents toilet for tasting and received reassuring praise from the industry.
Rye is notoriously tricky to work with, but Kyrö are dedicated to the earthy, sweet appeal of Finnish wholegrain rye.
History
Finland-based Kyrö was conceived by five friends doing as the Finnish do – drinking in a sauna. They wondered why no one was distilling rye whisky in Finland, when it tasted so good. The distillery was built in 2012 within an old dairy in the peculiar village of Isokyrö, and they set out on their mission. While waiting for their creation to mature, they decided to make a Kyrö gin too. To their surprise, it was selected as the best gin for a gin & tonic by IWSC in 2015, and they sold out of it in two days. Ten years since their founding, they are proud to continue creating critically acclaimed spirits, enjoyed throughout Finland and the world.
