The Glendronach enters its third century with a definitive archival release: The Glendronach Aged 56 Years, the oldest and most distinguished bottling ever released by the distillery.
Its story begins in September 1968 – a fabled vintage among connoisseurs of The Glendronach – as the distillery’s robust Highland spirit was entrusted to three Oloroso sherry butts from the historic bodegas of Jerez, before being transferred into three Spanish oak Pedro Ximénez hogsheads for enrichment in 2014. Maturing for its full 56 years in traditional dunnage warehouses, this singular marriage of time and exquisite oak has resulted in a whisky of unparalleled depth and refinement.
In the words of Master Blender Dr. Rachel Barrie, “The 56 Year Old is a stoic masterpiece. It possesses a structural integrity rarely seen in spirits of this age. It is the ‘Sherry Crescendo’ – a complex, multi-layered tale of dark cacao and ancient spice, refined by the irreplaceable influence of time. At fifty-six years old, it is exceptional.”
To house a spirit of such age and gravity, The Glendronach commissioned award-winning craftsman John Galvin to craft bespoke cabinetry, each case meticulously hand-carved from American Black Walnut and lined with rare quilted maple. A hand-blown Glencairn crystal decanter featuring bespoke brass metalwork and hand-engraved detailing cradles the spirit.
Bottled at cask strength of 44.9% abv, one of just 200 bottles released to celebrate the distillery’s two centuries of mastery in sherry cask maturation. Only a select few will get the opportunity to own and taste this rare and exceptional whisky.
The nose is both symphonic and decadent, with sherry, lavish dark fruits and cacao flowing into caramelised dates, oud wood, and blackberry compote. Silken black cherries, tonka beans and raisins unfold with perfect poise into an aria of bittersweet chocolate and mandarin on the velveteen palate. An exquisitely lingering finish, with more black cherries, fine dark chocolate and richly aromatic oak.
