This week, we're focusing on Rich flavours! Rich drams are all about intensity and drama - think dark chocolate, sherry, dried fruits, spices, and red meat. These are drams that perfectly pair with an indulgent meal packed full of flavour, like roasted venison or blue cheese!
First up in our list of Rich whiskeys, our Whisky Shop Brighton has recommended the Mortlach 16 Year Old Distiller's Dram.
Known as 'the Beast of Dufftown', Mortlach is distilled 2.81 times in a complicated process referred to simply as 'The Way'. This single malt, dubbed the 'Distiller's Dram' is inspired by the rewarding first bottling of the 16-year-old released in 1992. Matured in European oak sherry casks, the whisky is bottled at 43.4% abv.
The nose is bold and complex, with stewed black orchard fruits and earthy spice leading to a sweet and savoury palate of apricot, honey and leathery spice. These deep and robust flavours lighten into a surprising sweetening finish.

Mortlach was founded in 1823 by James Findlater, Donald Mackintosh and Alex Gordon. The distillery passed between hands a few times, but it was in the 1850s that it found its position as a pre-eminent blending malt, and the unique distillation methods became its signature style. How this style was found, noone knows. What we do know is that this classic style of making malt whisky gives Mortlach a very robust, meaty character, and one that you can tell apart from any other whisky on the market.
