Isle of Raasay Marsala Cask Limited Edition
The Isle of Raasay Distillery has just unveiled an exciting new addition to its portfolio – the Marsala Cask Limited Release. This marks the distillery’s first-ever whisky matured exclusively in rare Marsala Vergine barriques, sourced from the historic Frazzitta winery in Sicily.
The Whisky Shop team was lucky enough to visit the Raasay Distillery and enjoy the excellent hospitality (and drams!) that this Island distillery is famous for. During the tour, we were able to witness the passion and innovation that drive this young distillery, and we think that this new release is a perfect reflection of that spirit.
A Limited Release with Sicilian Heritage
Bottled at 50.7% ABV and limited to just 12,300 bottles worldwide, the Marsala Cask expression combines both peated and unpeated Raasay spirit. The result is a lightly peated dram brimming with baked apple and apricot sweetness, layered with smoked toffee. It also signals the beginning of a refreshed packaging journey for the distillery – a theme Managing Director William Dobbie spoke about with us during our time on the island.
Marsala Vergine wines are famed for their nutty, dry, and oxidative character, often likened to fine dry sherry. The Frazzitta winery, from which the casks were sourced, is one of Sicily’s oldest Marsala producers, known for aging their wines for decades in traditional oxidative environments. Marsala Vergine has carried the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) seal since 1969 – Italy’s very first such designation.
The Influence of Marsala Vergine
The Frazzitta barriques, seasoned with bone-dry Marsala for up to 30 years, have imparted remarkable depth and complexity to the Raasay spirit. Expect aromas of grape must and Parma violets on the nose, followed by stewed apples, ginger, and sweet pear on the palate, before a lingering smoky finish.
As Master Distiller Alasdair Day notes:
“Marsala Vergine casks, particularly from a historic producer like Frazzitta, are rare in the whisky industry, and have brought an exceptional depth of flavour to our Raasay spirit. It’s one of the most distinctive cask maturations we’ve ever released, elegant and assertive all at once.”
Inspired by Raasay Itself
As with every Raasay release, inspiration is drawn from the island’s remarkable geology. From Jurassic sandstone to volcanic basalt, Raasay’s rugged landscape has long fascinated geologists – something our team witnessed first-hand on our exploration of the island distillery.
The refreshed packaging reflects this geological story, with cool slate grey tones that echo Raasay’s volcanic rock formations. As Dobbie explained, the aim is to give the distillery’s range a clearer identity, distinguishing limited editions like the Marsala Cask Release while continuing to celebrate the unique character of the island.
