Spotlight: House of Hazelwood Legacy Collection
Today, the House of Hazelwood collection has grown to become the greatest inventory of aged Scotch whisky held anywhere in the world. Spanning seven decades and every corner of Scotland, the diverse whiskies tell stories of remarkable places, lost ways of working, first casks, last casks, the ambitions and achievements of several lifetimes - none of which will be repeated again.
For the first time, this once private collection is being offered to those out with the Gordon family, in small batches hand-selected for release. The Legacy Collection showcases some of the brightest highlights of the inventory, with lengthy maturations and limited-edition outturns. First of their kind and the last of the line, they capture the spirit of a bygone era in whisky production.
The Legacy Collection 39 Year Old Sunshine On Speyside
Distilled in the early 80s, this magnificent 39-year-old whisky has gathered lively and colourful notes that are synonymous with the era. This blended malt is bursting with tropical flavours of mango, pineapple, and citrus. Only 398 bottles were decanted. A delicate amber in colour, the nose opens with bright notes of freshly cut pineapple, charred fruit, with aromas of a Victorian sweet shop. On the palate, expect more tropical fruits, caramelised barbeque smoke and zesty citrus throughout.
The Legacy Collection 46 Year Old Spirit of Scotland
Limited to only 528 bottles, this 46-year-old blend was first created in 1994 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the oldest recorded reference to Scotch whisky within the 1494 Exchequer rolls of Scotland. This glorious double-matured Blended Scotch is a slice of Scottish distilling history, the oldest in the collection. Expect sweet, warming aromas of treacle, freshly-baked bread and old books. The palate brings in hints of smoke and bright flashes of lemon pie, with a long and wonderfully smooth finish.
The Legacy Collection 33 Year Old The Tops
'The Tops' in whisky making parlance, refers to the best of an inventory to be used in a blended whisky, typically used sparingly and decanted slowly over time. This rare blend of malts is an indulgent combination of House of Hazelwood's best 'tops', married together to create something even more precious. Limited to only 528 bottles. Dark walnut in colour, the truly indulgent liquid boats notes of treacle, toffee and caramel on the nose, with a complex palate of sweet sherbet and drying oak leading into the finish.
The Legacy Collection 43 Year Old The Lost Estate
Named for the two great lost distilleries from which the liquid was acquired, this rare and compelling blend of well-matured grain whiskies boasts a creamy, luscious character. A rich gold in colour, the expression is limited to only 564 bottles. On the nose, we find rich notes of pear drops and mandarin orange peel, leading to a wonderfully sweet palate of orchard fruits and a crisp, clean barley sugar character.
