The Number One Spot . . .

Top of our list in 2025 for Blended Scotch Whiskies was The Loch Fyne Blend.

What had this bottle at the top of the charts? Could it have been the smooth and mellow texture of this Scotch? Or that it is widely known as 'the malt drinker's blend' ?

First introduced to the market in 1996, it is now presented in a new bottle, however the liquid remains the same firm customer favourite. Bottled in handmade glass at 40% abv, it's full of orchard fruits, honey and cereal notes.

4. The Loch Fyne Living Cask Batch 18

In 1920, renowned connoisseur, Professor George Saintsbury, published Notes on a Cellar. In it he described an old method of drinking a mix of whiskies from a cask that is constantly topped up and never emptied. He wrote: “thus you establish what is called, in the case of sherry, a ‘solera’ in which the constantly changing character of the old constituents doctors the new accessions, and in which these, in turn, freshen and strengthen the old.” Loch Fyne’s The Living Cask takes its inspiration from this long-abandoned practice.

In this latest release, The Loch Fyne Living Cask Batch 18, is made with not only the signature Living Cask blend but also topped up with two beloved distilleries who recently celebrated bicentenaries. Sitting at 43.6% ABV, this is one to sip and savour.

Charles MacLean's tasting notes: "Amber in hue with moderate beading. Mellow with light prickle. The top notes are rounded and faintly reminiscent of Ryvita Crispbread, with a trace of vanilla toffee and green sticks. A lightly sweet taste to start, mouth-drying, leads to a lengthy spicy finish." - Whiskeria Spring 2024
