The Macallan is revered worldwide and is hugely sought-after by collectors. Founded in 1824 near Craigellachie in Speyside, the distillery emphasises their mastery of both wood and spirit, with its emphasis on creating whisky with the finest quality ingredients and processes.
The Macallan prides itself on its Six Pillars, which it testifies are being the six reasons to its success. The first is its spiritual home, the Easter Elchies House on the 485-acre Macallan Estate. The second pillar is its small stills which help concentrate the spirit and provide its characteristic rich flavour. A very select portion of spirit is then taken to form the starting point of the whisky. The liquid is then matured in high quality oak casks, these casks providing the rich, completely natural colour. This combination of location, method and experience help create an unparalleled single malt.
The Macallan marks 200 years in operation in 2024, with two centuries having passed since it was founded by Alexander Reid - a teacher, farmer and distiller. The celebration will be explored throughout 2024 via five key themes: Incomparable, Creativity, Craftsmanship, Legacy and Sustainability.
In July 2019, its new £140 million distillery and visitor centre opened on the Easter Elchies Estate. It made the shortlist for the Stirling Prize for excellence in architecture.
The Macallan is James Bond's whisky of choice.

History
Founded by Alexander Reid in 1824, The Macallan was one of the first distillers in Scotland to be legally licensed. The name of the area ‘Maghellan’ is formed from the Gaelic word ‘magh,’ meaning fertile ground and ‘Ellan,’ from the Irish Monk St. Fillan who brought Christianity to Scotland in the 8th century. As the reputation of the distillery grew and sales increased throughout the 20th century, Macallan had a major expansion between 1951 and 1963. In 1999, a majority shareholding in the brand was bought by the Edrington Group and, in 2024, they celebrated their 200th anniversary.
