The Balvenie distillery, located in Dufftown, is in the Speyside whisky region and was founded by William Grant in 1889. The distillery practices traditional whisky making processes which it has passed down through the centuries, and which it has won a slew of awards for.
Balvenie maintains the Five Rare Crafts – using home grown barley, having a traditional malting floor, using copper stills in a ‘Balvenie Ball’ shape, having an on-site cooperage and a Malt Master, David Stewart MBE, the longest serving Malt Master in the industry.
William Grant, who had previously worked at the Mortlach distillery for 20 years bought a patch of land near Balvenie Castle. It was here that he drew up plans for his distillery and laid the foundation stone for the building in 1886. Grant remained active in the company until his death in 1923 at the age of 83. The first official bottling of the Balvenie single malt was released in 1971.
