The concluding sixth release of The Macallan’s sustainability-focused Harmony Collection, this edition was created to celebrate the flavours of coconut.
While coconut is not an uncommon note to find in Scotch whisky as a whole, it is quite unusual for The Macallan, and their Whisky Mastery Team has exercised considerable skill and selectivity in bringing it forward on the nose and palate of this limited release. They’ve accomplished it by selecting whiskies matured entirely in American oak casks – home to higher levels of the lactones that contribute coconut flavours – using a mixture of ex-bourbon and sherry-seasoned casks for balance and roundness.
As with previous editions in the series, the whisky is presented in sustainable packaging that employs thematically appropriate waste materials. The box is crafted using paper that incorporates discarded coconut flakes, while waste coconut husks and shells were carbonised to produce charcoal, imparting a natural black colour.
However, it’s the distinctive coconut flavours and aromas generated by all that American oak that make this release so special. A gloriously playful and vibrant treat to be savoured. Presented at 46.3% abv, free from artificial colour.
Fresh coconut and lime zest on the nose, orange, lemon, mango, and papaya layered with vanilla, almond and a hint of nutmeg and cinnamon. Sweet lime, lemon and vanilla sponge with desiccated coconut, icing sugar, coconut milk, dried tropical fruits and sweet oak on the bright palate. Bursts of coconut and floral honey dot a lively finish.
