Mortlach 25 year old description

Formerly one of the less well-known gems of Speyside, coveted by those in the know, Mortlach's light is now being firmly pushed from under its bushel with a luxurious new range of single malts.

The oldest expression in this range, the 25 year old is matured exclusively in refill American oak casks which impart a rich, amber colour whilst retaining the balance between the underlying character of the spirit (the "distillery character"), and the flavours imparted by the wood.

The bottles for this range, and in particular this 25 year old, are designed to reflect Victorian engineering designs in a tribute to one of the key figures in Mortlach's history, George Cowie, a civil engineer.

Knowledge Bar

Dr Nick Morgan of Diageo explains the change from 70cl bottles to 50cl bottles for the new Mortlach range:

“This is a break with tradition and Diageo is a very traditional company but we wanted to do something different with Mortlach,” he said. “We have only ever done a 50cl bottle in some Asian markets and mainly in Taiwan because there are problems changing the bottle size and as a traditional company Diageo hadn’t wanted to do that.

“But there are two main reasons for the change. Firstly, there isn’t very much liquid, especially of the 18 and 25 year old's and this is a way of ensuring that that liquid gets in to more hands. And two, because the bottle doesn’t work as well at 70cl. It looks a bit clunky.”

Georgie Bell, global brand ambassador for Mortlach, said: “Mortlach whiskies are a celebration of those audacious thinkers who shape and make today’s world, just as their forefathers did in the era in which Mortlach was born. These spectacular bottles help tell that story.”
