Taketsuru 17 Year Old Description

The Taketsuru range is named after the founder of the Nikka Whisky Company, Masataka Taketsuru.

The Taketsuru whiskies are a combination of single malt whiskies from Nikka's two distilleries, Yoichi and Miyagikyo. In the 17 year old, a high percentage of the whiskies have been aged in ex-sherry casks, resulting in a deep, rich, complex whisky with more than a hint of smoke and oak.

Knowledge Bar

Masataka Taketsuru left Japan in 1919 to study chemistry at Glasgow University before learning the art of whisky distillation by working at a number of Scottish distilleries and, in 1920, marrying a Scottish girl, Jessie "Rita" Cowan. Taketsuru chose Yoichi, on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, as the site for his first distillery because he believed that the geography, geology and climate of this part of Japan was most similar to Scotland.
