The long-awaited first single malt release from The Borders Distillery, housed in a restored Victorian electric works in the heart of Hawick. The distillery is independently owned, founded by a group of industry-veteran friends in 2013 and completed in 2018, with spirit flowing for the first time in the region since the closure of Kelso Distillery in 1837.
Patiently matured for eight years, their inaugural single malt is a softly elegant dram built on a foundation of first-fill ex-bourbon cask maturation, with a Madeira cask finish adding depth to its rounded sweetness. The distillery exclusively uses locally grown barley, sourced from farms within 35 miles of Hawick, and their style is classic Lowland, with long fermentations and large, lampglass-shaped stills built to maximise copper contact generating a vibrant, fruity spirit.
One of just 10,000 bottles, presented at 46% abv, free from artificial colour or chill filtration.
Honey, vanilla, and fresh orchard fruits on the nose, with citrus zest, lightly spiced stewed fruit and warm caramels on the palate. The finish is gently drying and nutty, with hints of toasted almonds and hazelnuts.
