The sixth release in Nc’nean’s annual, limited-edition Quiet Rebels series turns to the honeyed, coastal influence of Manzanilla sherry hogsheads, sourced from Nc’nean’s long-term cask partner José y Miguel Martín in Jerez.
Each Quiet Rebels bottling honours one of the people who make Nc’nean what it is, and this year it’s blender Matthew Hastings’ turn to be celebrated. Matthew also selected the whisky for this year’s release, bringing together liquid matured in Manzanilla, bourbon and oloroso sherry casks, with the Manzanilla and bourbon casks making up 47% and 51% of the marriage respectively.
To use Matthew’s own words: “I spend a lot of my time tasting through casks and looking for those that have something a little unexpected about them. When I first came across these Manzanilla hogsheads, I was expecting something quite dry and austere, but instead they were wonderfully sweet and salty, and I kept coming back to them. That surprise became the starting point for my Quiet Rebels release: a little unconventional, full of flavour and, most importantly, really delicious.”
Matured for six years, Quiet Rebels: Matthew is bottled at 48.5% abv and limited to 4457 bottles worldwide, non-chill filtered, presented at natural colour, and made with 100% organic Scottish barley.
It’s a richly textured dram, full of tropical fruit, toasted hazelnut, and sweet and salty popcorn notes.
