Octomore needs very little introduction. While Bruichladdich’s annual, small-batch series has always pushed the boundaries of peated intensity, its unexpected refinement has earned it the nickname The Impossible Equation. They’ve given their 17th collection the subtitle ‘Chromatic Signatures’, inspired by the vibrant spectrum of flavours created by their unique combinations of smoke and oak influence.
17.2 starts with the same batch of mainland Scottish Concerto barley as 17.1, peated to 81ppm. In contrast to 17.1, the resulting spirit was aged for four years in French oak casks that previously held Californian red wine, then bourbon, before being transferred to first-fill port barriques for an additional year of maturation. Rich, vibrant and beautifully composed, the port cask influence amplifies the fruit and spice while still allowing the barley and peat to shine through. Bottled at 59.5% abv, free from artificial colour or chill filtration.
A brightly fruity nose of strawberries and blackberries melds with blackcurrant jam and steadily building, earthy peat smoke on the palate, brightened by a vibrant punch of lemon zest and lime oil. Aromatic black pepper warms the finish.
