Pappy Van Winkle
Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve has been described variously as “more a folk tale than a whiskey”, “a unicorn” and “the most hyped bourbon ever,” all on account of its rarity. It is often regarded as one of the finest bourbons in the world, and can be extremely difficult to find due to its very low production and high demand.
About Pappy Van Winkle
Made at the award-winning Buffalo Trace Distillery, Pappy Van Winkle is one of the most sought after whiskies around. Expressly produced according to the historic Van Winkle family wheated-recipe and matured in deep-charred heavy oak barrels stored in the heart of the aging warehouses, the bourbon is notable for its rich and smooth profile.
Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year is the #1 rated Bourbon Whiskey in the world with a 99 out of 100 rating by the World Spirits Championship.
The whiskey has a cult following, and a favourite of celebrity chefs Anthony Bourdain and David Chang.
In 2022, a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year sold for 17 times its estimate at Sothebys auction house.
History
The whisky is named for its creator – Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle Sr. Van Winkle is a Dutch name that loosely translates to “from shopkeeper.” Julian Sr. founded Stitzel-Weller distillery in 1931 at the age of 61 in Louisville, influencing the business until his death at the grand age of 91. Pappy Van Winkle was conceived of during the 90s revival of bourbon drinking, in which Pappy’s grandson bottled the liquid from some of the old Stitzel-Weller barrels – and caused a fervour. Since then, Buffalo Trace has began producing the liquid, it’s prominence only growing.
