    Glen Garioch Single Malt Whisky

Glen Garioch is the most easterly distillery in Scotland, and one of the oldest still functioning today. Located in Old Meldrum, a few miles north of Aberdeen, it was first established in 1797 by Alexander Manson. The distillery had a number of ownership changes in its early life; most notably the distillery was sold to DCL in 1937, however, World War 2 brought a number of restrictions and the distillery struggled to maintain any kind of efficient production levels of whisky.

Stanley P Morrison purchased the distillery in 1970 for £150,000 and oversaw the reinvigoration of the brand with a number of innovations. In 1972 Glen Garioch became the first distillery to gas fire its stills and many others soon followed. In 1977 an innovative waste-heat recovery system known as The Greenhouse Project was installed. The system supplied heat for the malt kiln and wash, and also warmed an acre of glasshouses. It is estimated this saved Glen Garioch £90,000 per year. The distillery is now owned by Morrison Bowmore Distillers, a subsidiary of Japanese company Suntory.

All of the spirit currently produced at Glen Garioch distillery now goes into creating their single malt whiskies, although it was previously the heart malt for the famous VAT 69 blend created by William Sanderson. Glen Garioch carries a popular core range of single malts, including 12 year old and 15 year old expressions.
