Golf's oldest championship deserves a whisky with a story worth telling. To mark The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale, Loch Lomond's Master Blender, Michael Henry, in collaboration with Loch Lomond Ambassador, Colin Montgomerie, has crafted this limited special edition single malt. The release captures the spirit of an occasion - the anticipation and the atmosphere that makes The Open unlike any other event in sport.
This expression is crafted from whisky distilled in Loch Lomond's distinctive Straight Neck stills, a design unique to the distillery that delivers their signature house style of orchard fruit, honey, and soft smoke. What sets this edition apart is its finishing, after initial maturation in American Oak, the whisky spends six months in Argentinian Malbec casks, adding complexity without obscuring the distillery's core character.
Bottled at 46% abv without chill-filtration, you can expect a nose of dark berries and redcurrant alongside citrus zest, with vanilla, honey and soft malt in the background. Blackberry and raspberry on the palate, with peach syrup, crisp apple, and a toffee sweetness. Gentle spice and a subtle thread of smoke run through the mid-palate. The finish is medium in length, with lingering berry sweetness, soft oak spice, and a light, warming smokiness.
