About Jura

Jura whisky is made using the crystal clear waters that run off ‘The Paps of Jura’, the tallest mountain range on the isle. Some of the tallest stills of any island distillery are used to distil the spirit, adding to the purity of the whisky. After maturing in mainly American oak ex-bourbon barrels, the whisky is decanted into Jura’s iconic bottle – with its broad shoulders and rounded edges originally designed to withstand rough sea journeys.

The distillery was reconstructed in 1963, and designed by renowned architect William Delmé-Evans. He then went on to assist in the building of Glenallachie.

The whisky was modelled on the lighter expressions of the Highland tradition, to differentiate from their near-neighbours on Islay - famous for their heavily-peated and smoke-bomb whisky.

The island of Jura is famed for its beauty. Indeed, George Orwell completed his masterpiece Nineteen-Eighty-Four while visiting Jura.

History

Illicit whisky distilling occurred on Jura for centuries, and early incarnations of the spirit were made using locally grown rowan berries. In 1810, a legal Jura distillery was founded by the Laird of Jura, Archibald Campbell. It soon fell into disrepair, and was revived and dismantled numerous times. However, in the 1950s, two Jura landowners, Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith, decided to reconstruct the distillery in order to revive the local economy. By 1963, the distillery opened and began production, founding the Jura as we know it today. A single malt expression was launched in 1974, and the range grew steadily over the years, In 2018, Jura went through a considerable revamp, and introduced a new range of whiskies with a lightly smoky character.
